Paris-based telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent has won a patent case against Microsoft. A federal district court jury set damages at $1.52 billion on Thursday, according to reports.
The French telecommunications giant Alcatel-Lucent had in November sued Microsoft for infringing on a number of its U.S. patents, which included a method for rewinding and jumping forward to certain points in a digital video stream.
Microsoft has said it is considering appealing the recent decision. The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker said the patents in question govern the conversion of audio into the digital MP3 file format on personal computers.
Last week alone, the Redmond giant Microsoft had settled an antitrust class-action suit Just one class action remains, in Mississippi. It would be interesting to see how that turns out.
