How To: Stop Blog Spam Forever
Published by Sunny on March 25th, 2007 in WordPress tipsBlog spam is growing everyday. With new methods and software emerging everyday, its not common to see at least 10 spam per day. There are hundreds of organizations out there coming up with methods to combat this menace. For WordPress, there are plugins to stop spam from entering your blog.
There are mainly 3 types of blog spam,
- Comment Spam
- Contact Form Spam
- Trackback Spam
The most common of them all is the comment spam. So here are some methods by which you can counter these:
- Comment Spam - The most common tool used to prevent this is Akismet. It stops almost all comment spam from appearing on your blog. Another prevention method is the Math Comment Spam Protection Plugin. This adds a simple math question to the comment form and keeps away bots.
- Contact Form Spam - The Enhanced WordPress Contact Form is the best way to prevent contact form spam. The plugin features inbuilt spam protection and all the best features like referrer logging and search engine logging.
- Trackback Spam - This is not as common as comment spam and contact form spam, but just as well tricky to spot if you’re in a hurry. The Simple Trackback Validation Plugin eliminates trackback spam by checking the whether the referring page contains your site link or not.

Have to say, Akismet does a really good job at keeping comment spam at bay, although it can get a bit carried away sometimes

Indeed, I still remember the time when any comment by Sameer would result in Akismet marking it as spam. Inspite of de-marking the comments, Akismet never learnt. Sameer eventually began using a different id to comment!
